Jurassic plant

The Wollemi pine, the world’s oldest species of tree, was discovered in a remote part of the Blue Mountains in 1994. The tree’s closest relations became extinct during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods – 200–65 million years ago. As one Sydney-based botanist exclaimed at the time, ‘This is like finding a living dinosaur in your backyard.’

If you have time to spare, take a trip to a less touristed lookout, Govetts Leap, near Blackheath, 12km (7.5 miles) west of Katoomba. The views are perhaps even more spectacular, while the comparative lack of crowds gives a better sense of the wilderness around you.

The Aboriginal Blue Mountain Walkabout Tour gives a unique perspective into the connection between Australia’s indigenous people and their land. The tour is conducted by Evan Yanna Muru, an Aborigine born on Darug land, and is a one-day immersion course in Aboriginal culture taught with an interesting walkabout through often rugged bush (tel: 0408 443 822; www.bluemountainswalkabout.com; daily; reservations required).
